Using Marcel Curling Irons To Style African American Hair

Author: Hairdo4U September 29, 2010
curling ironsSome of us who know anything about curling irons may be of the impression that a Marcel curling iron plugs into the wall just like other traditional curling irons.  However, another type of curling iron that is actually heated by placing it in its own unique stove is also called a Marcel curling iron.  This particular curling iron is also known as a barrel stove iron and has even been called a curling tong.  I guess because in some respects it looks like a pair of tongs.
So with all of the modern technology that has surrounded us, why are there still barrel stove irons available for use.  The best answer to this question comes from many professional hair stylists that work with African American hair or any ethnicity that has extremely coarse and curly hair.  For many it is the amount of heat that can be generated by heating up this tong shaped instrument in its own stove, which does in fact heat up by electricity.  The second reason has to do with preference and by that I mean that many of the hair stylists that have been around for more than ten years or so feel that using the marel curling iron provides you more control over the curl, whether it be the electric or the non-electric type.
The stove marcel curling iron does not have a spring loaded handle and doesn’t open by pressing your thrumb and snapping it shut.  Your entire hand and thumb actually opens and closes the handle and also holds the iron closed over the hair.  To use the iron you need to take a small section of your hair by using a comb to straighten the section and remove any tangles.  Be sure to use a hair styling product that will protect the hair from the intense heat.  Pull the section of hair through the open iron until the iron is at the end of the hair. Next you will close the iron around the section of hair and use your hand to determine the amount of pressure. You definitely have to keep in mind that the stove iron curling iron is much hotter than one is accustomed to and very little pressure and less time is needed than with the electric Marcel curling irons.  As you are rolling the hair around the curling iron, be sure to keep the hair flat or twist it as you roll the hair.  If you are twisting the hair this will create a more spiraled shape curl.  Lastly, slowly pull the iron through the hair and allow the curl to lie gently while it is cooling.
curling ironsTo finish off the style, you can run your fingers through your curls to separate them and then finish by using a light hair spray.  These curls should last all day.
If you are in the market for a barrel stove iron and/or curling iron stove, Belson Gold ‘N Hot has an exceptional line of products.  Their stove irons have heat-resistant rotating handles that are perfectly balanced for ease of operation.  These high quality steel barrels hold heat longer and have a closed end for consistent, even heat distribution.  They come in a multitude of sizes and are economical.

Le Angelique Flat Irons Go Aeordynamic

Author: Hairdo4U September 27, 2010

le-angelique-caretin-professional-titanium-iron-416x416I guess it was just a matter of time before aerodynamics entered the hair styling tools arena.  It’s the 21st century so why not?

So just exactly how does aerodynamics fit in with a straightening iron?  To answer that, let’s think about what aeorodynamics really means. Aerodynamics involves both the motion of the object and the reaction of the air.  The best way to explain this is to picture a modern day airplane without its wings.  If you can visualize this then you now know what shape the new Le Angelique Caretin Flat Iron looks like. So what does the appearance of the flat iron have to do with anything?

The round body of the Caretin flat iron helps to achieve beautiful curls.  A straightener that creates beautiful curls? Obviously this is one straightener that fits into the multi-functional category.  The Caretin’s unique form is a one of a kind rarity, allowing for multi-dimensional styles. This aerodynamically modeled straightener allows for obtaining angles of use that one can only obtain using this iron as well as the fact that you can get closer to your scalp with the curved ends.  This is not your traditional flat iron. The smooth rounded body also helps glide through your hair evenly, without pulling or tearing your hair.

Did I mention this flat iron has titanium plates?  The modern Mirror Titanium Plates generate Nano negative ions, which work to seal in the hairs natural moisture leaving hair silky and frizz free.  This hair straightener also comes with a regulated heat dial to help you achieve your own personal temperature, ranging from 170-420°F in only seconds. The 360° swivel cord moves with you and keeps the cord from tangling.  All that’s left now is for you to check this one out the next time you are shopping for a flat iron.  You can’t find a better deal on a unique hair styling tool that offers you more than one option in styling your hair.  This straightener is what sets Le Angelique flat irons miles apart from many of the other professional manufacturers.

Cultivating a Whole New Look

Author: StylinG September 22, 2010

denmanNow that colleges across the nation are back in session for the fall semester, it’s the perfect time for a fashion renaissance. Guys who were known as geeks in high school have a second chance to establish a bold, stylish reputation. They say that clothes make the man, and this is absolutely true if you’re only counting the first impression. After that, your personality can come shining through.

Don’t force your new look, however, as your peers will be able to sense a lack of authenticity. Rather than changing every single aspect of your personal style – gelling your hair, wearing flashy colors, etc. – start with the basics. Run a Denman brush through your hair in the morning instead of simply rolling out of bed and be sure to shower every morning. Find a pair of attractive men’s dress shoes and use them as a foundation for the rest of your look. Just make sure that your belt and shoes match; beyond that, you can use a little creativity.

Relive The 1980′s With Crimpers Flat Irons

Author: Hairdo4U September 21, 2010

hair-crimp-2420x340I ran into a lady the other day that was going to be celebrating her 40th birthday with  friends that were throwing her a 1980′s birthday bash.  She was shopping for crimpers flat irons , or as some call them crimpers curling irons, that she and other friends could use on their hair.  I told her that in actuality, crimpers had made a comeback in the last year or so and she wouldn’t necessarily be investing in it for just use at the party.  Crimping hair can be a lot of fun but also can result in yet another hair style that adds some body to your hair.

Crimpers are just another of many hair styling tools that are being added to an individual’s aresenal of hair styling appliances.  There are several  types of crimpers available in the marketplace and they are manufactured by several different companies.  Hot Tools has one out that comes with a variable heat control that goes up to 430 degrees fahrenheit and has a 2 inch plate.  Belson Gold ‘n Hot also offers a 2 inch plate with 2 heat settings.  BaByliss PRO has even come out with a mini crimper that has a 5/8″ plate and is dual voltage so you can take it with you worldwide.

So, whether you are trying to recreate an 80′s or even a 70′s look, or just looking for an alternative hairstyle from time to time, check out a crimper and style away.

Nose Hair Trimmers – A Must Have

Author: Hairdo4U September 15, 2010

nose hair trimmerAlright men, do you have a significant other who has been hassling you over your ever present nose and ear hairs? For many men, there comes a time when the appearance of hairs in the nose and ears just is not attractive.  And, in many cases it can be a total turnoff for women.  Some look at protruding nose and ear hair as unsanitary and just not caring about their personal hygiene.  And, so as not to sound sexist, yes, there are times when women have an extra long nose hair that is being a real pest and needs to be removed.

Well guys and gals, there are no more excuses.  We have surpassed the time when you had to use scissors or tweezers (ouch) to rid you of these unsightly hairs.  We are in the modern age, and as such, there are electric nose/ear hair trimmers or battery operated models that will get the job done.  There are many in the marketplace to choose from but my recommendation is don’t buy the first thing you see, and don’t buy the least expensive.  Remember that you are dealing with delicate areas in both your nose and ears, and the last thing you need is to inflict injury and pain needlessly.

When shopping for your new nose and/or ear hair trimmers, look for something that “trims” and doesn’t cut.   Keeping in mind, however that these hairs are there for a reason ( for the nose the obvious is so that your delicate membranes of the inner nasal passage are protected from dirt and debris), so you don’t want to be shaving away what was initially intended to be there.  Keep in mind that you also want a trimmer that is comfortable and easy to use.   Once you find what you are looking for, follow the instructions carefully and you and yours will be ready to face the day looking well groomed.

African American Haircare Tips

Author: Hairdo4U September 13, 2010

328862-22721-39Black hair is extremely fragile and as such, extra care must be taken to avoid hair breakage, hair loss, and splitting of ends.  Two very important ways to address these issues are to make sure that you own a wide tooth comb as well as a natural boar brush.  The wide tooth comb will not get caught up in your hair.  A natural boar brush pulls the sebum from your scalp through your hair and coats the strands.  This results in providing a protective barrier and adds shine and fewer split ends.  Think in terms of a boar brush as an aid to providing your hair with a natural conditioner.

Conditioning black hair is of the utmost importance.  Keeping the hair moisturized is key.  When shopping for haircare products, finding the right kind of conditioner is important, such as a leave-in conditioner for routine usage.  A once-a-week conditioning treatment can also be something to do on a regular basis, especially during those times of the year when your hair has more tendancies to dry out.  Lastly, because the texture of black hair requires more oil, a serum that contains natural oils that can be used on a daily basis is also highly recommended.

If you haven’t already heard of Potions International (PI) haircare products, then now is the time to check them out.  They manufacture a Rinse-Free Hair Moisturizer that has organic aloe vera juice and coconut oil just to name a few of the many natural ingredients.  Their product called Power Construct is a a Beta Keratin Oil treatment that is rich in natural ingredients to include almond oil, aloe vera gel, olive butter and even mango butter.  Use this at least once a week and you will see improvement in your hair after even the first use.  And, PI’s Super Serum with Organic Argan oil will instantly penetrate and absorb into your hair and reduce the frizz, repair the hair, protect the hair from heat, create shine, and provide UV protection.  This serum smells amazingly fresh and you will find yourself dabbing it on yourself in areas besides just your hair.

Silence Is Golden In A Hair Dryer

Author: Hairdo4U September 10, 2010

silhp385iAre you tired of the appliance that you probably use more than any other, ringing loudly in your ears every time you use it?  Let’s face it, the loud sound that permeates the air as we blow dry our hair can really be annoying let alone the fact that the noise can actually be polluting the air.

There is an answer out there and it is the Silence HP hairdryer.  This amazingly quiet hair dryer that is made right here in the United States, is energy efficient and uses less than 650 watts of energy (less than half the wattage used by conventional dryer).  It provides 1650 watts of power and even is made of recycled plastic.  There are two heat settings and a cool shot button.  This dryer comes in two models, the Graphite and the Ionic which features natural energy tourmaline.

So, if you are looking for a quieter professional hairdryer, why not check out the Silence HP hair dryers and GO GREEN!

Hourglass Shaped Brushes – A New Innovation

Author: Hairdo4U September 9, 2010

spornette-provo-tourmaline-round-brush-series-278x278If you have been in the marketplace looking for a new styling brush, I’ve stumbled upon one that absolutely works great!!  Oddly enough, these hair brushes have an hourglass shape.  One might wonder how this particular design can actually do the job, but let me tell you that it works.  And, naturally, this particular brush is a Spornette hairbrush and  is called the “Provo”.

The contour of the bristle pattern actually “centers” your hair to securely gather the section of hair you are blow drying.  The tourmaline enhanced boar bristles are excellent for gripping the hair and also minimizes any breakage and splitting of the ends.  The foam gripped contoured core of this brush results in a very lightweight brush and makes it very easy to hold and handle.

To maximize use of this brush you do not need to wind the brush around your hair while drying.  Just take a section that fits comfortable within the bristling area and pull slowly using a professional hair dryer at an angle.   For brushing your hair out, there is no twist involved,  just brush straight through.

AND, if you are a professional hair stylist, I have heard that many salons are now raving that this Provo brush works wonders when doing the Brazilian Blowout or Keratin complex treatments.  Leave it to Spornette to design something that is multi-functional, good quality, and affordable.
